Rewinding Wednesday AHSAA softball state championship tournament

The AHSAA softball state championship tournament continues today at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park.

Two champions will be crowned today, Class 5A and Class 1A, with Class 4A and Class 2A beginning play.

Class 5A Satsuma and Class 1A Brantley await elimination bracket winners to decide championships.

The new teams will play to the winners bracket final and two rounds of elimination play – three games total for teams that win – in the double-elimination tournament.

The No. 1 qualifier from each of four regionals plays the No. 2 qualifier of a designated regional in first round action.

The West No. 1 qualifier plays North No. 2 qualifier, East No. 1 plays North No. 2, East No. 1 plays South No. 2, South No. 1 plays East No. 2 and North No. 1 plays West No. 2.

8:22 PM: No. 1 Brantley 11, No. 3 Skyline 3, final. Brantley is the Class 1A champion once again, winning its fifth title in the last eight years.

Kaylee Navarre gets the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts and allowing six hits. The Bulldogs combine for four home runs, two from Kayden Dunn as she reaches 21 for the season. Sheonte Barginere and Ainsley Watts added one homer each. Brantley finishes the season with a 32-12 record.

Skyline ends the year at 26-11-1.

8:15 PM: Brantley 11, Skyline 3, top 7th. The Bulldogs add some insurance runs including a bases-clearing double by Ainsley Watts and an RBI single from Kaylee Navarre. Skyline now has three outs to save its season.

7:58 PM: Brantley 7, Skyline 3, bottom 6th. Skyline strands two runners in scoring position as the Bulldogs move closer to the title. Kaylee Navarre is up to six strikeouts through six innings of work.

7:46 PM: Brantley 7, Skyline 3, bottom 5th. It’s a home run party for the Bulldogs.

Sheonte Barginere drives one over the left field wall to extend Brantley’s lead and breaking the program’s record with 53 home runs as a team. It is quickly followed by back-to-back home runs with Kayden Dunn’s second of the game and Ainsley Watts’ blast over the right field scoreboard.

7:41 PM: Brantley 4, Skyline 3, bottom 5th. Kaylee Navarre with five strikeouts through five innings, 46 in the tournament.

Brantley needs six more outs for fifth title in last eight years.

7:35 PM: Thursday’s Class 2A schedule is set with Pisgah and Mars Hill facing off at 10:45 a.m. in the opening elimination game with G.W. Long set to play against the winner. Orange Beach is awaiting, already in the championship and needing just one win to grab the blue trophy. The 2A championship is currently scheduled to start at approximately 5 p.m.

7:29 PM: Brantley 4, Skyline 3, bottom 4. Olivia Treece’s double leads to run in the fourth as Skyline continues to chip away at the lead.

7:22 PM: Pisgah 10, Lamar County 5, final. Pisgah, who has played in the two longest games of the tournament so far, advances to the second day and will start its day at 10:45 a.m. against Mars Hill in the elimination game.

7:10 PM: No. 7 Orange Beach 7, No. 3 G.W. Long 1, final. The Mokos win to advance to the 2A championship. Justine Henderson strikes out three and allows just five hits and one unearned run to earn the win in the circle. Teagan Revette and Ava Hodo had two hits each. G.W. Long moves into the loser’s bracket final.

7:06 PM: The Class 4A bracket is set for the second day of play. No. 8 Etowah and ACA will get things started at 9 a.m. Thursday with No. 5 North Jackson awaiting the winner. No. 1 Rogers will play the winner of that game in the championship, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. with the if necessary game scheduled directly after.

7:01 PM: Brantley 4, Skyline 2, bottom 2nd. Skyline cuts the lead in half as Aidan Bellomy grabs an RBI double before scoring on a Brinlee Potts groundout.

6:53 PM: No. 1 Rogers 4, No. 5 North Jackson 3, final. Karly Jones game-winning single scores Marlo Williams in the top of the seventh. Hannah Price strikes out 10 to earn a complete game victory in the circle. The Pirates advance to the Class 4A championship. North Jackson will play in the loser’s bracket final.

6:42 PM: No. 4 Mars Hill Bible 1, No. 1 Sumiton Christian 0, final. Riley Vaughn pitches a complete game shutout, striking out eight while scattering just three hits and three walks. Mars Hill advances to the second day and will need to win four games tomorrow to earn the state title.

6:40 PM: No. 1 Brantley 3, No. 3 Skyline 0, bottom 1st. Kayden Dunn hits a three-run homer to give Brantley an early lead in the 1A championship game. Brantley has the upper hand, needing just one win to earn the title while Skyline needs two.

6:37 PM: North Jackson 3, Rogers 3, bottom 6th. Chloe Chisenall hits her second home run of the day to level the score.

Orange Beach 5, G.W. Long 1, bottom 4th. Daigle Wilson’s RBI single extends the lead for the Mokos.

6:25 PM: Mars Hill Bible 1, Sumiton Christian 0, top 6th.

Rogers 3, North Jackson 2, top 6th.

Orange Beach 3, G.W. Long 1, bottom 4th.

6:21 PM: ACA 2, LAMP 1, final. Joanna Joiner misses a walk-off grand slam by just a few feet and ACA extends its season another day. Izzy Warrick allows just one unearned run over six innings of relief work to earn the win the circle. ACA will play Etowah in an elimination game Thursday morning. LAMP is eliminated and finishes its season with a 30-16 record.

6:09 PM: Etowah 14, Cleburne County 4, final in five innings. Ellington Jones hits a walk-off single to earn the run-rule victory for the Blue Devils. Hailey Bennett finishes with four hits and four RBIs at the plate. Etowah advances to the second day of the tournament and will resume play at 9 a.m. Thursday.

6:02 PM: ACA 2, LAMP 1, bottom 6th. Rose Costanza singles to bring home Izzy Warrick, giving ACA the lead in the sixth.

Rogers 2, North Jackson 0, bottom 4th. Emily Ahonen gets the first runs on the board with a two-run homer to left field.

Mars Hill 1, Sumiton Christian 0, top 3rd. Maddie Sain’s RBI single puts the Panthers in the lead.

Orange Beach 2, G.W. Long 1, bottom 2nd.

5:56 PM: No. 7 Satsuma 6, No. 6 Ardmore 1, final. Satsuma wins the Class 5A championship.

Madi Sawyer finishes off a complete game victory, striking out four while allowing just two hits and walking two. Ashlyn Stewart and Desi Denmark both finish with a pair of RBIs. The Gators claim the program’s first ever state title and finish the season with a 34-10 record.

Ardmore fended off four elimination games behind the arm of Ella Singletary at the state tournament but came up just short.

5:48 PM: Etowah 13, Cleburne County 4, top 5th. A two-run triple from Jaleigh Deoine extends the lead. Deoine comes around to score on an RBI single from Lauren Farmer and Hally Bennett adds to it with another RBI triple.

Orange Beach 2, G.W. Long 0, bottom 1st. The Mokos take advantage of a Long error then Ava Hodo delivers an RBI double to extend the lead.

Satsuma 6, Ardmore 1, top 7th. Ashlyn Stewart rips one-out triple and scores on Bri McDonald’s double. McDonald scored on Desi Denmark’s bunt. Madi Roberts added a RBI single in the three-run sixth. Gators need three outs for their first state championship.

5:37 PM: Satsuma 3, Ardmore 1, bottom 6th. Satsuma eighth grade pitcher Madi Sawyer has allowed only two hits, walked two and struck out three through six innings. She needs three more outs to close out the title for the Gators.

5:35 PM: No. 2 Sumiton Christian 0, No. 4 Mars Hill Bible 0, top 1st. Riley Vaughn takes the circle for the Panthers. One of these teams will be eliminated here and one will extend its season another night in the Class 2A tournament.

No. 3 G.W. Long 0, No. 7 Orange Beach 0, top 1st. The winner of this one will advance to the 2A championship.

LAMP 1, ACA 1, bottom 5th. Haley Oswald ties the game up with an RBI single, scoring KG Taylor.

5:24 PM: Rogers 0, North Jackson 0, top 1st. The 4A winners bracket final is underway. The winner of this game will advance to tomorrow’s championship.

Etowah 9, Cleburne County 4, top 4th.

5:11 PM: Satsuma 3, Ardmore 1, top 5th. Gators take lead with three in the 4th inning. Sophie Page singles and Hayden Andrews and Madi Sheffield reached on bunt singles to load the bases. Ashlyn Stewart doubled to score two runs and Desi Denmark doubled home another.

5:08 PM: Etowah 7, Cleburne County 4, bottom 3rd. A two-run single from Kaylee Shierling cuts into the Etowah lead. The Blue Devils call on ace Sydney Simpson to come on in relief and she gets another strikeout to end the inning.

5:04 PM: No. 1 Pisgah 1, No. 8 Spring Garden 0, final in 11 innings. No. 00 Briley Worley fittingly gets the game-winning hit to end the marathon pitchers duel, scoring Hannah Duncan from second base. Pisgah advances and will have to play one more elimination game today, facing Lamar County later this evening. Spring Garden’s season ends with a 26-12 record.

4:58 PM: Etowah 7, Cleburne County 1, top 3rd.

ACA 0, LAMP 0, bottom 2nd. ACA eighth grader Izzy Warrick enters the circle to take over pitching for Rose Costanza.

Pisgah 0, Spring Garden 0, top 11th. Still.

4:47 PM: Ardmore 1, Satsuma 0, bottom 3rd. Bo Riley doubles, Sydney Sanders scores. Advantage Ardmore.

4:43 PM: Satsuma 0, Ardmore 0, top 3rd. Ardmore has gone six up, six down. Satsuma has two hits but both runners were thrown out trying to take an extra base.

Pisgah 0, Spring Garden 0, top 10. It goes on.

LAMP 0, ACA 0, bottom 1st. The winner will move on to day two while the loser’s season will be over.

4:39 PM: Mars Hill 6, Sand Rock 2, final. The Panthers keep their season alive and will now have to face No. 2 Sumiton Christian in another elimination game. Sand Rock’s season comes to an end.

4:27 PM: Satsuma 0, Ardmore 0, Bottom 1st. Madi Sawyer in the circle for Satsuma. Ella Singletary heads back out for her seventh straight start for Ardmore. Satsuma is the home team for the final game of the Class 5A season. The winner will walk away with a blue trophy.

Pisgah 0, Spring Garden 0, top 9th. Another inning goes by without any runs.

Etowah 5, Cleburne County 1, top 2nd. The Blue Devils send up all nine of their hitters to the plate in the opening inning.

4:15 PM: Pisgah 0, Spring Garden 0, top 8th. Pisgah’s Kennedy Barron and Spring Garden’s Abbey Steward have been dueling with their seasons on the line as we head to extra innings still scoreless.

Mars Hill 5, Sand Rock 2, bottom 5th.

4:04 PM: Orange Beach 6, Sumiton Christian 4, final. Justine Henderson gets the complete-game win, striking out two while allowing four runs on nine hits. Sumiton’s Bailie Hall allowed six runs (three earned) and struck out five. Orange Beach will play G.W. Long in the 2A winner’s bracket final.

3:59 PM: Cleburne County 7, Hamilton 2, final. Alyssa Hunt takes a no-hitter into the seventh inning and finishes a complete-game victory with 11 strikeouts. Hunt also adds two hits and two RBIs at the plate. Hamilton finishes its season with a 32-22 record. Cleburne County is set to play another elimination game, this time against Etowah.

3:55 PM: Ardmore 5, Satsuma 3, final. Ella Singletary pitches a complete game, limiting the Gators to just three runs despite 10 hits. Raegen Clem homered while Brooke Phillips knocks in two runs at the plate. Hayden Andrews homered for Satsuma. The two teams are set to play again with the Class 5A title on the line.

3:49 PM: G.W. Long 11, Lamar County 1, final in 5 innings. The Rebels advance to the 2A winners bracket final.

3:37 PM: North Jackson 8, Etowah 3, final. Chloe Chisenall had a three-run homer. Hadley Burnette struck out five and allowed just one earned run in a complete game effort in the circle. North Jackson moves on and will play Rogers in the winner’s bracket final later today.

3:32 PM: Ardmore 4, Satsuma 3, top 7th. The Gators cut into the lead. Anna Jo Bonds and Madi Roberts had one-out singles and Katelin Booker followed with a RBI double. Sophie Page added a sacrifice fly to close the gap.

3:23 PM: Orange Beach 2, Sumiton Christian 2, top 5th. Back-to-back RBI singles from Falyn Beebe and Justine Henderson have leveled the score in this winner’s bracket contest.

Ardmore 4, Satsuma 1, bottom 6th. Ardmore is six outs away from forcing a deciding game in the championship series.

3:08 PM: Skyline 13, Appalachian 8, final. Skyline scores the game’s final 11 runs to advance to the Class 1A championship against Brantley. Jayla Ross goes 5-for-5 with five RBIs including a home run in the victory. Olivia Treece added another homer for Skyline. Dacey Allen gets the win in the circle, throwing 3 2/3 innings in relief. Appalachian finishes the season with a 24-9 record.

3:02 PM: Ardmore 4, Satsuma 1, top 5th. UNA signee Raegan Clem hits a home run and Brooke Phillips adds her second RBI single of the day to extend Ardmore’s lead.

2:57 PM: Skyline 13, Appalachian 8, bottom 7th. Skyline scores six in the seventh inning to take the lead. Jayla Ross grabs her fifth hit of the game, scoring the go-ahead runs after Appalachian led 8-2.

2:51 PM: North Jackson 5, Etowah 2, top 5th. Chloe Chisenall hits a go-ahead, three-run homer over the left field fence.

Rogers 7, LAMP 0, bottom 5th. It’s another RBI hit from Gracie Rogers to extend the Pirates’ lead.

1:56 PM: Appalachian 8, Skyline 2, bottom 4th. Taylor Woodard triples before scoring on a sacrifice bunt from Gracey Gulledge as Appalachian inches closer to a rematch with Brantley in the Class 1A championship.

Gracie Ashley’s two-out double knocks in Izzy Ingle for the walk-off victory. Pisgah gets a pair of RBIs from Lila Kate Wheeler and Briley Worley each while Kennedy Barron adds an RBI triple.

1:16 PM: Appalachian 2, Skyline 0, top 2nd. Jordan Henderson’s two-run homer in the first inning has Appalachian in the lead in the 1A elimination game. Brantley awaits the winner in the championship game.

1:12 PM: Lamar County 5, Mars Hill 4, final. The Bulldogs erase a four-run deficit in the final inning to move ahead in the winner’s bracket.

1:05 PM: No. 7 LAMP 0, No. 1 Rogers 0, bottom 2nd. The second set of Class 4A games is partially underway.

Pisgah 7, Sumiton Christian 4, bottom 5th. Pisgah scores five runs in the fifth inning to take the lead, including a two-run triple from Briley Worley.

1:02 PM: No. 6 Ardmore 2, No. 1 Faith Academy 1, final. Ella Singletary finishes off her second complete game of the day, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning. Aliana Grace King had the big RBI triple to push Ardmore’s second run across. Ardmore advances to play No. 7 Satsuma in the championship where it will need to win two more games for the title.

12:54 PM: Mars Hill 4, Lamar County 4, bottom 7th. The Bulldogs stay alive as Cammie Rogers delivers a three-run triple just before scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game.

12:48 PM: No. 7 Orange Beach 3, No. 8 Spring Garden 1, final. Justine Henderson pitches a complete game, allowing just one unearned run on four hits while striking out four. Teagan Revette homered in the win.

12:43 PM: Sumiton Christian 3, Pisgah 2, bottom 4th. Gracie Ashley’s RBI single pushes Sumiton into the lead for the second time.

12:35 PM: G.W. Long 5, Sand Rock 1, final. Morgan Ferguson closes out a 13-strikeout complete game, allowing just three hits. MaKenna Long finishes with three RBIs, including an inside-the-park home run.

12:30 PM: Skyline 9, South Lamar 6, final. Olivia Treece goes the distance and gets the win in the circle while striking out nine. Treece also led Skyline with four hits and two RBIs at the plate. Skyline will now play Appalachian in another elimination game as Brantley awaits the winner in the championship.

12:11 PM: G.W. Long 3, Sand Rock 0, top 6th. Makenna Long and Morgan Ferguson with consecutive RBI singles to extend the lead.

Pisgah 2, Sumiton Christian 2, bottom 3rd.

12:04 PM: Ardmore 2, Faith 0, bottom 4th. Aliana Grace King just extended Ardmore’s lead with an RBI triple to right field.

Skyline 7, South Lamar 4, top 6th. Nealy McManus delivers an RBI double to cut into the lead but Skyline pitcher Olivia Treece gets out of a jam to limit the damage.

12:01 PM: Mars Hill 3, Lamar County 0, top 4th. Riley Vaughn helps her own cause with a two-run single to right field to extend the Panthers’ lead.

11:53 AM: Orange Beach 2, Spring Garden 1, top 4th. Teagan Revette hit a solo homer to take the lead for the Makos.

11:47 AM: Sumiton Christian 2, Pisgah 1, top 2nd. An error brings in the tying run for Sumiton before a sacrifice fly from Bailee Hall scores Alex Erwin to take the lead.

11:37 AM: No. 1 Pisgah 1, No. 2 Sumiton Christian 0, bottom 1st. Kennedy Barron delivers an RBI triple to open the scoring before getting in the circle for her first inning of work.

11:29 AM: Skyline 6, South Lamar 0, bottom 4th. Olivia Treece has two RBIs at the plate and has six strikeouts through three perfect innings in the circle.

11:24 AM: The Class 5A elimination semifinal has started. It’s a quick turnaround for Ardmore but it leads No. 1 Faith Academy 1-0 after one inning. Winner advances to play Satsuma for the championship.

11:20 AM: The first round of the 2A tournament is underway.

11:13 AM: The next set of 4A games is set for 12:30 p.m. In the winners bracket, No. 1 Rogers will face No. 7 LAMP while No. 8 Etowah plays No. 5 North Jackson. In the elimination games, ACA plays Haleyville and No. 3 Cleburne County squares off against Hamilton.

11:03 AM: Rogers 3, Hamilton 0, final. Hannah Price throws a two-hitter while striking out 10 and walking five. Karly Jones goes 3-for-4 at the plate from the leadoff position while Heidi Garner and Gracie Rogers add two hits each.

Ardmore 4, Alexandria 1, final. Ella Singletary finishes off a two-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks. Ardmore advances to face Faith Academy in the losers bracket final. Rylee Gattis finished with seven strikeouts but Alexandria’s defense commits five errors and Ardmore scored three unearned runs. Alexandria finishes the season with 41-12 record.

10:56 AM: No. 5 North Jackson 8, Haleyville 4, final. Hadley Burnette gets the win in the circle, striking out five while allowing two runs on five hits. Peyton Hill’s 2-run double sparked North Jackson’s offense.

10:50 AM: No. 7 LAMP 4, No. 3 Cleburne County 0, final. Caitlyn Russell strikes out 13 in a complete game shutout to advance LAMP into the winner’s bracket quarterfinals. Joanna Joiner homered in the win.

10:47 AM: No. 3 Skyline 3, No. 2 South Lamar 0, bottom 1st. The Class 1A elimination game is underway. Aiden Bellomy delivered an RBI triple and scored on a single by Dacey Allen as the Vikings jump to an early lead.

10:36 AM: No. 8 Etowah 3, Alabama Christian 0, final. Sydney Simpson fired a two-hitter, walked four and struck out 14 and Kacie Byrd drilled a 2-run home run in a win over the defending Class 4A champions.

10:31 AM: Rogers 3, Hamilton 0, bottom 6th. Gracie Rogers had a RBI triple and Aubree Heuzel followed with a two-run single in the sixth. Hannah Price has allowed only one hit through five innings.

10:30 AM: Ardm.ore 3, Alexandria 1, top 6th. Ardmore uses four straight bunts and a sacrifice fly from Alaina Grace King to score a pair of runs to take the lead. Bri Daily scored on the go-ahead run on a bunt from Brooke Phillips

Alexandria 1, Ardmore 1, bottom 4th. Ardmore ties the game in the top of the fourth as Madey Simmons stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

9:43 AM: North Jackson 5, Haleyville 0, bottom 3rd: Peyton Hill has two-run double in the third.

Coach Chris Goodman, the school’s winningest coach in all sports he’s coached, is retiring after the state tournament after 36 years at the school. He is 564-219-9 with three titles and three runner-ups in softball; 389-192 with two titles in baseball; 216-168 in boys basketball; and 225-93 in girls basketball.
